COP probe-No waveform?!
Sep 30th, 2009 at 9:36am

Hi guys,
I am using my brand new COP probe (i've had it a while but not used it) on an 03 Renault Laguna 1.8 16V with 4 coils on the plugs.

I have followed the instructions that came with it but I am not getting a waveform, can anyone tell me if I am doing something wrong.

I have used the King Lead preset in the secondary ignition menu.

I have the latest software version 6.2.14.0

I do not have the grounded cable but I am using two BNC to 4mm plugs, two black plugs to ground, two red plugs together and either BNC in the scope and probe, as advised in the instructions.

Help appreciated as always,

Dan

Hi Dan,

The COP probe doesn't work on all COP designs.  I am not familiar with that but does it have the pencil coils?

Sounds like you are doing it right.  I would not use the preset, but the secondary probe inverted is the correct one to use.   Suggest you turn off trigger, adjust samples and screen time so you can see more and experiment to try to find the 'sweet spot' on the coil that will display a pattern.  Then you can adjust settings once you know what to capture.

You can test it out on another application.  Holding it near the coil on a distributor system will work also to see if the probe is working.

Thanks Tom i will try that to make sure it is working.

You are right they are pencil coils, another tech on a different forum has not had much luck with these coils, he believes they are shielded too well.

Thanks for your help as always

Dan

Dan,

The COP probe doesn't work on the pencil coils because the windings are down in the tube and not up top.

If you can access the primary, that would give you the same spark line information you would get from secondary.

Oh that makes sense Tom.

Would the primary be found on the two pin plug attached to the coil?

Cheers

Dan,

I do not have a diagram for that but, if the coils only have two wires, then the primary drive is likely external and one of the wires is coil neg (primary)  Be sure to use an attenuator and scale accordingly for the high voltage.
