Self taught frustrated motorbike guy

Hi folks, my name is Ed and I'm from Australia.  I'm a total geek (IT security is my day job) and love my motorbikes and all things mechanical.  I guess it was only a matter of time before my geekiness spread to the garage.

Some time ago my well-worn Honda Interceptor (VFR800) decided to start playing up, and so the slippery slope of getting into scopes - hey that rhymed! - began.   I've gotten to the point where I need to get serious with a serious scope, because up until now I've been using a DSO Nano.  Please forgive me.

I've also learned much about EFI.  I started with "How to Tune and Modify Engine management systems" by Jeff Hartmann, but that was coming at the problem from the wrong side, so now I've bought Paul Danner's eBook which is *brilliant*.

Did you know that motorcycle EFI systems are completely brain-dead?  The ECU in my bike has a total of 20 fault codes - and they only trip if the relevant sensor is literally un-plugged!  As you can imagine, I can't rely on any codes to give me any hints - I need to learn everything from the ground up.  Hence:  Autonerdz!

Hello and welcome to Autonerdz.  Smiley
If you want to learn about LSD, this is the right place to be.  Cool

I repair motorcycles too, and had been a member of http://www.ozvfr.net and http://www.ozblackbird.net/ for years. I’ll bet you know them and Brent Johnston, who used to run these sites.  Wink

those are cool little scopes, i use them for electronics projects, are you running benf version 2.61 or higher if not you might want to look into it because the scope is unusable with out it, theres an opticoupler i designed to run coils and injectors for that scope also...welcome to nerdz

I run the BenF Firmware 3.62 on it - the original firmware was, as you say, useless.

My preference now is to get a Pico scope 2-channel unit.  It's early days but I'm assuming I won't need a coupler in order to check for coil and injector triggering?
