what type computer to use ?
Mar 26th, 2013 at 3:26am

Hello all I have been all over this site and picos main site. I am fairly certain I remember reading somewhere about being able to use netbooks to run the pico scope. I have seen the page with the minimum requirements. For the life of me I can not find that particular topic. Any one know where I could find it? By the way searching didn't bring it up either that's why maybe it might be on the Pico scope main website. Thanks this is a fantastic site really loving it. Wink

Hello,
I found it on the pico site.
http://www.picoauto.com/automotive-software.html

You should be able to run pico off a netbook.

A netbook can be used for Pico.  I use one all the time but most netbooks are running slower processors. I also use a desk top with better specs for really cranking the scope up.

Tom's suggestion is to have a 2ghz or higher processor and at least 2G of RAM.

The Pico software has two modes of operation.  It either uses the scope memory (block mode) or uses the PC resources (streaming).  Just about any PC will run block mode.  Most PC's will operate streaming to a certain extent but the best performace will be using Tom's spec suggestions.

While a netbook will work some patience will be required if you really want to crank up to the scopes maximum abilitiy.

Sam

Our recommendations on a PC can be found on our Frequently Asked Questions page:

http://www.autonerdz.com/faq.htm

Sam's right.

Even Pico's recommended specs are not enough to run PicoScope in power user modes.  That's not nearly enough RAM and the PC will come to a grinding halt.

now I assume that I can download the software off the internet or will I need the CD that comes with the kit to do the first install?

You can choose to install the release version available here:

http://www.picoauto.com/software.html

And you can also install the beta version if you want.  They can both live on the same PC without messing with each other.  You can get the beta here:

http://labs.picotech.com/

You may need the beta to open some files posted here.  Many of us are using it and the newer files it saves cannot be opened with the release build.

Once you have an Autonerdz kit and are part of our Picogroup, we have a custom Autonerdz version with some tweaks.
