For the benefit of anyone wondering about this:

You can do this but it is not recommended.  This is because you would have use the insert image button and, in order to do that, you would have to link to an image URL.  This means that, unless we put your images on our server manually and send you the URLs, these images would reside somewhere else and therefore not be viable into the future.  We can only ensure that content remains if we can host it.  When an image is posted that resides on another server somewhere, they always vanish eventually.

The attachments method of posting an image is the only practical way to get them on our server where they will be preserved.  Unfortunately, this method always adds the images to the end of the post and you can’t place them in text.
